COZY APARTMENT ELEVATED BY SMALL DETAILS

Andaika Courtois of Andtopia Design had been fielding a recurring question from prospective clients, whether she takes on apartments. This cozy apartment inspired by clean Scandinavian design became her answer. In a smaller space the story lives in the pieces and how they come together, so the photography needed to carry the design through its details rather than grand gestures of architecture or square footage.

With only two spaces to photograph, we planned the half-day shoot without a scout. Instead we used a working call to bounce ideas and build the notional shot list together. White space was part of that plan too, room around each subject so the design could breathe and the eye could settle on what mattered.

WIDE, INTIMATE, DISTILLED

Andaika and I worked together to lay out the elements that underscored the storytelling of how small details can elevate apartment living. Scope and contextual views of each space. The sofa with its personal travel art backdrop, a chair to one side and the coffee table in the foreground. A close “essentials” frame gathering the entertainment wall’s materials together. An overhead view of the sofa, chair, and table that popped to mind as we talked. And the minimalist bedroom shown as efficient and calm, with an added touch of lived-in indulgence in the form of a tray of partially eaten morning bites on tousled bedding…one of those relatable “moments between the moments” that enrich the narrative.

While structured, we left space for finding moments we didn’t plan. One detail scene near the end of the living room’s entertainment shelf caught my eye right as I arrived, where morning sun through the blinds laid parallel bands of light across the vertical slats of the decorative panel. It was an unplanned glimpse of character right from the start, so before unpacking the gear I quickly captured it handheld. Less than ten minutes later the light had moved on, and the view was gone until the next sunny day. Another came from walking the room in search of converging design elements, this time while looking down where furniture, accessories, and the floor formed a distillation of materials and form. Words were not doing it justice, so we grabbed a step stool and let the picture carry the thousand words. Both were additions to the plan, and both made the cut.

The set moves through the spaces as a series of found moments that an inhabitant might experience. Wider views set the context, intimate vignettes draw out the details and their relationships, and distilled views, framed where a scene’s elements converge, add a nuance that invites you to look again. That is the reward of a planned collaboration exploring a smaller scope that leaves room for a bit of serendipity.

“As a designer it is so easy to constantly doubt yourself. I love working with Dan because he has this ability to highlight my designs while preserving his style. His curated images of my work always reignite my confidence. Thank you Dan for loving what you do, it makes working with you an absolute delight!”
