SMALL BASEMENT WITH BIG LIGHTING CHALLENGES
Alexander Woodcock of Amulet Atelier completed a small Virginia-Highland basement project that needed to work for parents and for teens. Ahead of shoot day we scouted together to map the layout, set the story and feel, and plan the light. The prop list was kept simple enough so it felt lived in: a welcoming tray with hummus and pita, a pitcher of lemonade, and select pieces throughout that reflect the homeowner’s taste. Fresh florals and branches add a bit of life so the space reads in use, not staged.
Dark cloud cover with heavy rain cut the space’s already limited daylight on shoot day. As a workaround, I created my own directional “warm afternoon” window light with orange gelled flash from outside the windows along with a kiss of interior fill to brighten the mood while staying true to the room’s personality. The goal was believable light, calm warmth, and controlled color so it stays real.
Compositions, lighting, and restrained styling aimed to bring out the warm wood, texture, and quiet details that make this basement space feel polished for adults and easy for teens. Together, we produced a set that remained true to Alexander’s design and ready for Amulet Atelier’s brand use.
